Gallstones: Symptoms and Laparoscopic Surgery

Why gallstones form, the symptoms they cause, and what to expect from laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

By Prof. Dr. Levent Avtan

Gallstones are common. Some cause no symptoms, while others lead to repeated abdominal pain or serious complications. Understanding the warning signs helps patients seek treatment at the right time.

What does the gallbladder do?

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ beneath the liver. It stores bile and releases it into the bowel after a fatty meal to help digestion. Changes in the balance of bile can allow stones to form.

Why do gallstones form?

Risk factors include excess weight, rapid weight loss, female sex, pregnancy, increasing age, family history and certain blood or metabolic disorders.

What are the symptoms?

The classic symptom is pain in the upper right abdomen, especially after fatty food. Pain may travel to the back or right shoulder. Bloating, indigestion, nausea and vomiting may occur. Jaundice, dark urine, fever or shivering can indicate obstruction or infection and require urgent assessment.

Does every stone require surgery?

Some completely silent stones can be observed. Surgery is usually recommended when stones cause attacks or complications such as cholecystitis, bile duct obstruction or pancreatitis. Gallstones cannot generally be removed permanently with herbal remedies or routine medication.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

The standard treatment removes the gallbladder together with the stones through several small openings. The liver continues to produce bile after the gallbladder is removed, and most people digest food normally. Temporary indigestion after very fatty meals may occur early in recovery.

Recovery

Many patients go home on the same day or after one night. Walking and light food usually begin shortly after surgery. Most return to everyday activity within a week and progressively resume all activities over the following weeks.

Gallstones are usually treated comfortably when addressed in time, but neglect can lead to inflammation, jaundice or pancreatitis.
